Everytime you minister through the arts it is not going to be perfect. It may have holes in it from where.they erased too much...you may not even know what the picture but it is still perfect. I love the standards that Dave Ramsey teaches regarding finances and success. I also appreciate that his success principles are Biblically based. He recently shared Tom Corley's list of 20 habits of the rich vs. the poor. As we forge on to be successful in life, Christ, and our ministries, these same principles can be applied to us. I looked at the list and decided to revamp it and apply many of the principles to the Performing Arts Minister. So here is my list of 5 things Every Successful Performing Arts Minister should do everyday!
Every performing arts ministry needs a website. Everything we do is visual, so if you are looking to reach more people with your ministry whether that is regionally, nationally, or even internationally, the internet gives you the potential to reach thousands of people virtually for free :-). Pretty sweet deal if I do say so myself. Over the next few weeks I will be showing you how to create your own website for free or a with a very small investment.

I recently came across an article written about Kirk Cameron from February 2013...yes, I was obviously tardy for the party on this article but the message he gave the students of Liberty University is one that needs to be reiterated over and over again. He told the film students:

“I encourage you: have convictions, have standards, don’t let others set
them for you. They will set the bar too low,” he told students. “Set
the bar high and perform for an audience of One (God)—and you’ll get the
applause of Heaven; you can just trust God to take care of everybody
else. That’s the motto I go by."

This message resonated with me because it is so true. Everyone knows that my catch phrase is Our job is bring God's word to the world in 3D. This is what Mark 16:14-15 commissions us to do:

14Afterward
He appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at the
table; and He reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart,
because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen.
15And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

In order to spread the Gospel of Christ we must understand that first and foremost we minister unto God, then to Believers, and then to Unbelievers. As a minister of the performing arts we must understand that there is indeed ministry in our performance. As we continually balance "playing a part" and being entertaining whether it is through a play, dancing on stage, writing a book...the ultimate goal is to win souls for Christ.

In the PERFORMING ARTS its important for our display to be entertaining but if we always hold God as the center of what we do He will be pleased and we will touch the heart of those watching us.

To summarize, Kirk Cameron's advise is a great guideline for those of us choosing the perfect song to sing or dance or the play we are going to write or perform in.
1. Have convictions.
2. Have standards, don’t let others set
them for you. They will set the bar too low

What are your thoughts on what it means to Perform for an Audience of One?
Genesis 1:27 tells us that we were created in the Image of God. Do you believe that? Use your clothing to share your love of Christ! I designed this t-shirt to serve as a reminder that we have been created in the image of Christ! The hand represents the
imprint of God on our life and reminds us of the sacrifice Jesus made
when He died on the cross for our sins!

Ministry marketing is often a very controversial subject because it is often viewed as a mechanism for producing sales, but if you are a liturgical dancer, author, playwright, etc. you will encounter marketing on some level. At some point I always encounter the question, "Is it okay to market My Performing Arts Ministry?"

Well, let's look at the word. Mark 16:14,15 says:

14Afterward
He appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at the
table; and He reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart,
because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen.
15And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

Mark 16:14-15 is The Great Commission to all believers. We have been charged with telling the world the Gospel or "Good News" of who Christ is. This scripture let's us know that our job is to win souls to Christ and to bring God glory in all that we do. If you work in the performing/creative arts ministry on any level you are already in a unique position in that you minister The Word in 3D. God has gifted us with the ability to take The Word off the pages of the Bible and make them tangible for people to understand it.

What is Marketing Anyway?
In short, Marketing is a fancy word for SHARING. If you look at large companies like Coca Cola they became popular because they shared the product on television, Magazines, and now social media. They made the soda look so appealing and refreshing that if you found yourself thirsty you would think about needing to quinch your thirst with Coke.

How does Marketing and Ministry Work?
This is what we do with The Word. When a preacher shares the word on Sunday morning he or she is in a sense marketing or sharing the goodness of the Lord in a way that people would not hear or understand it. For you the Performing/Creative Arts Minister we do the same thing.

If you are reading this post then you probably have a vision of taking your ministry outside of the four walls of your church. I am here to let you know that as long as you do everything is decency and order it is perfectly fine to have a vision to take your ministry further.

Marketing in ministry takes place in several ways:

1. Word of Mouth- When you are asked to participate in a service or other event people will begin to speak about your ministry

2. Social Media: Websites, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc. are all mechanisms for communicating that your ministry is available to travel

3. Media Outlets: Radio, Magazines, etc.

When used properly these different mediums can be very effective. Every Monday we will explore different ways for you to share your ministry to the masses.
For every Christian author out there that has considered writing a children's book, here is some good news...The Bookseller reported that 58% of children STILL prefer reading physical books. Why is this good news? Well, sometimes it's difficult to imagine putting a children's book into a digital format and while children are going to the digital formats a survey of 1,074 children ages 6-17 by the Scholastic Inc's Kids and Family Reading Report found the following:

*58% of respondents aged 9-17 said they will
always want to read books printed on paper even if there are e-books
available.

Do children like to read for fun?

* Among the children who have read an e-book, 21% said they are
reading more books for fun

*48% of boys aged 6-8 are most likely to read for fun 5-7 days a week, 37% of Boys aged 9-11, 28% aged 12-14 and 18% aged 15-17

* 47% of girls aged 6-8 are also most likely to read for fun 5-7 days a week, 40% of girls aged 9-11, 28% of girls aged 12-14, and 30% of girls aged 15-17.

Why do Children & Parents like e-books?

*Children and parents identified convenience as the most popular
benefit to reading e-books, with 57% of children and 50% of parents
choosing this reason. Having a read-aloud option was only chosen by 31%
of children, and was therefore their least popular benefit, and 22% of
parents.

* Children prefer e-books when they don't want their friends to know
what they are reading, and when they are traveling, the survey found,
but value print books more when they are reading at bedtime and when
they want to share a book with friends.

So...what's so great about an ebook?

* Meanwhile, 72% of children cited a dictionary as the most
important attribute of an e-book, with 70% choosing note-taking,
highlighting and commenting features and 67% choosing built-in
activities to make a child a better reader and/or build vocabulary.

So what does this mean for us as authors? Well, I believe it shows that we need to change with the times. While children are still reading printed books, having our books available in a digital format will be a great thing to expand our reach with children, parents, and schools. This also lets us know that if we continue to produce great content there are children who want to read it. Yes, I can finally say MY MUSIC. I've dreamt of becoming a Christian Recording Artist since I was a child and it's finally happening.

So...I have a best friend, Tee Tunnell Harris of The Keys Productions. She is a phenomenal musician and producer and she's been asking me for two years to allow her to hear the many songs I've written. I know that you are probably thinking I'm crazy to have someone in my circle who wants to hear my music and I was too scared to sing for them, but that was the case for me :-). Needless to say, I emailed her a sample of one of my songs and now we are working on bringing it to the world!!!

I'm going to be opening for "A Night of Gospel" on November 23, 2013 and this is the first time my face is on a flier...hehehehe (can you tell I'm excited?).

I hope to see you there!
